Intent

This painting was an opportunity to explore a more intimate, candid portrait style while continuing to develop my understanding of the figure through direct observation. I wanted to capture a sense of presence and personality in the sitter, while also maintaining a clear and cohesive composition. The study format allowed me to focus on refining the drawing and value structure without the pressure of a fully resolved final piece.

Process

  • The painting began with observational studies from a live model in order to establish believable structure and proportional clarity. Working from direct reference allowed me to ground the traditionally frontal iconographic pose in real anatomical presence, particularly in the hands and facial planes. After refining the drawing, I transferred the composition to a prepared canvas and established a toned ground to unify the value range from the outset.
  • The figure was developed through controlled layering, beginning with large value masses before resolving smaller structural details. I prioritized clear edge relationships and restrained transitions in order to maintain stability within the symmetrical composition.
