Intent

This painting is a focused study of a contemporary reinterpretation of John Martin’s The Fall of Babylon (1835), concentrating on the lower-left section of the composition. Rather than recreating the full architectural spectacle, I isolated the clustered figures in shadow to examine how mass, gesture, and directional light communicate spiritual tension and collective fear.

The work explores the compression of large-scale apocalyptic imagery into a more intimate register, emphasizing silhouette and value contrast over architectural detail. By concentrating on the human forms emerging from darkness, I aimed to study how light functions symbolically—separating heaven from earth, illumination from collapse, and order from chaos.
