Intent

This work explores the Christ Pantocrator image as a study in visual authority, symmetry, and controlled light. Drawing from Byzantine prototypes while incorporating naturalistic modeling, I sought to balance transcendence and humanity within a stable, frontal composition. The painting emphasizes clarity of hierarchy and architectural presence, reinforcing sacred imagery as a disciplined visual system rather than purely expressive depiction.

Process

  • The painting began with observational studies from a live model in order to establish believable structure and proportional clarity. Working from direct reference allowed me to ground the traditionally frontal iconographic pose in real anatomical presence, particularly in the hands and facial planes. After refining the drawing, I transferred the composition to a prepared canvas and established a toned ground to unify the value range from the outset.
  • The figure was developed through controlled layering, beginning with large value masses before resolving smaller structural details. I prioritized clear edge relationships and restrained transitions in order to maintain stability within the symmetrical composition.
